When it comes to design, lighting can be a highly underestimated element of a space however, it shouldn’t be an afterthought in the design process. Lighting can instantaneously change the feeling, mood and functionality of a space with a flick of a switch.
From occasional lighting like floor and table lamps to wall and ceiling lighting, including these pieces can help transform a space to make it feel more cosy and impacting and aiding the overall aesthetic.
While down lights are a very practical solution particularly for working areas such as a kitchen or study they can kill the mood and overall feeling of a space and offer no design flare to an overall scheme.
Here at Trit we are dedicated to helping our clients achieve their goals of transforming their homes into what they have been dreaming of. So we have put together a little guide to help tackle the tricky topic of lighting and helping you transform the design of your home to a whole new level of sophistication.
Occasional lighting:
From Floor lamps to Table lamps, this category of lighting is one of the easiest and most cost effective ways to change the ambiance of your space. Not only do they look beautiful and are eye-catching, they can provide directional lighting that serves as a function too.
For instance, next to a sofa or lounge chair for reading a book, highlighting a special Objét displayed on a piece of furniture or an artwork hanging on a wall.
Generally lower in wattage, thus consuming less power, occasional lighting can provide a sumptuous subtle glow that can create a sense of warmth and comfort, particularly when a “warm light” globe is used. This is a must in our opinion. Nothing but warm light!
Pendant lighting:
This category is one of the most diverse and can be the most impactful from a design perspective whilst also performing an important function. Either in lieu of or working in conjunction with down lights, pendant lights are a great opportunity to make a statement in your space. Saying yes I am here and look how beautiful I am!
They can be viewed as a sculptural art piece that is fixed to your ceiling.
Whether it’s a singular pendant or a cluster of pendants you can provide ambient lighting whilst also creating a visual feast.
Wall lights:
As the category name describes; this form of lighting is fixed to a wall substrate. When looking at installing wall lighting a few things are to be considered before purchasing.
Size, Scale and mountable surface for installation.
You really want to consider the size relative to the space and function. For example if you are installing wall lights in a corridor for directional and functional light it best to select something on the more compact side. The last thing you want to do is make a small space like a corridor feel smaller by having a larger cumbersome light protruding from the wall making it harder to move through the space.
Some people utilise wall lights in lieu of occasional floor lamps. Wall lamps can be less invasive than a floor lamp and take up much less floor footprint than a floor lamp. Also less cords to hide as they would be hard wired into a light switch making it far more easy to use.
In the same way wall lights can be a more permanent substitute for a table lamp, this is most commonly seen however not limited to a bedroom setting above a side table. This can really elevate a space and also make the space more user friendly leaving the top of the bedside table free of clutter and messy cables.
